Office of the Children's Lawyer

What is the Office of the Children's Lawyer & How Can It Help?
The Office of the Children's Lawyer ("OCL") is a government agency that represents children in certain legal proceedings.
In family law disputes, a case may be referred by a judge.  It will be up to the OCL to decide whether they can provide services.  The OCL may:

  • provide a clinical investigator (usually a social worker) to provide a written report about custody / access to the judge
  • provide a lawyer to represent the interest of the child in court (with or without clinical investigator assistance)
  • decline to provide services

the parties are required to submit intake forms immediately, if a judge makes a referral.

There is no fee for these services.

This is one of the best ways of getting the wishes of the child (with the background or context to the child's wishes) before the court.

Learn more about this service at the Office of the Children's Lawyer site.
